Osteopathy

Osteopathic medicine is a patient-centred, holistic, hands-on approach to diagnosing and treating illness and injury.

Osteopathy is based on the basic concepts that:

  • The body has an innate ability to heal.
  • All the parts of the body function together in an integrated manner.
  • Structure influences function, i.e. injury to one part of the body’s structure will influence function in another part of the body.

Osteopathic medicine focuses on the musculoskeletal system, examining the back, muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments, for pain and restriction that would indicate injury or impairment.

The benefits of osteopathy include general restoration of overall stability and mobility of the body.

A doctor of osteopathic medicine is a qualified physician licensed to practice medicine, prescribe medication and perform surgery. Like a doctor of medicine (M.D.), an osteopathic physician completes 4 years of medical education and specializes in a particular field. However, osteopathic medicine differs in that it follows a holistic approach to patient care. Osteopathic physicians follow a system that considers the impact of lifestyle and community on the health of each individual.

Your doctor uses a broad range of gentle hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat your condition. The manual techniques called osteopathic manipulative treatment regulate the mechanism and restore balance among the different parts of your body, improve the natural condition while treating the abnormality, and thereby enable overall health and wellbeing.
